SIGNS, SYMBOLS, GESTURES
Gallery Project presents Signs, Symbols, Gestures a multi-media exhibit featuring artists whose work explores the creative usage of signage as media of communication.
The exhibit opens at noon on Wednesday, October 24 and continues through 4pm on Sunday, December 2. The opening reception is Friday, October 26, from 6-9.
From the earliest cave markings to today’s clever arrangement of punctuation marks sprinkled throughout email messages, humans have attempted to communicate their thoughts and ideas through signs, symbols and gestures. In fact, as modern society becomes more and more technologically savvy, it seems our impetus towards communication seems to rely more and more heavily on the use of signage to get our messages across. This exhibition examines the many ways in which our lives are both informed and influenced by the language of signs, symbols and gestures.
“Signs, Symbols, Gestures” explores a variety of themes relating to this topic. From the investigation of brand identity systems and scientific symbols to the secret language encoded in signs; from evocative markings of the human hand to the subtle gestures of body language, artists in the “Signs, Symbols, Gestures” exhibition employ a range of media to express the complexities of human perception and communication.
The exhibit is curated by Marianetta Porter, professor of art at the University of Michigan School of Art and Design.
